Zelenskyy To Speak With Trump Today After Trump-Putin Call
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Wednesday that he will speak with US President Donald Trump later today to gain insights into Trump’s recent call with Russian President Vladimir Putin and plan the next steps in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Speaking at a press conference in Helsinki alongside Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Zelenskyy confirmed his upcoming call with Trump. The discussion follows Trump’s two-hour conversation with Putin on Tuesday, which focused on the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy addressed the limited ceasefire on energy infrastructure agreed upon by Moscow. He urged the US to oversee its implementation, stating that Ukraine would refrain from targeting Russian sites if Russia complies.
The Ukrainian leader called on allies to boost assistance to Kyiv, rejecting Putin’s demand to halt Western military and intelligence aid. He emphasized the need for stronger support to counter Russia’s offensive.

Tuesday’s call did not secure the full 30-day ceasefire Ukraine had endorsed earlier. However, Russia agreed to pause strikes on Ukrainian energy targets, marking a small step towards de-escalation after three years of conflict.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that Putin and Trump “trust each other” and aim to normalize US-Russia ties. He noted the call lasted around two hours, signaling intent for further dialogue.
“Today I will have contacts with President Trump and we will discuss the next steps,” Zelenskyy told reporters in Helsinki. He added, “The United States should be the main controlling entity” for the energy ceasefire.
Zelenskyy stressed the importance of US monitoring to ensure Russia adheres to the partial truce. “If the Russians don’t hit our targets, we will definitely not hit their targets,” he assured during the press conference.
Zelenskyy’s call with Trump later today could clarify the path forward for ceasefire negotiations. Updates on US involvement and potential shifts in allied support are expected as talks progress.
